Dinnertime in Greece

Good evening from Agia Marina.
We are now on our last few days down here by the Mediterranean. Our time has flown by and on Saturday we fly home.

After a long day at the beach today, we got showered, dressed and went out to a very cozy Greek restaurant just down the street from us.

I think this is the first holiday we have been on where I have not felt the need to get super dressed up and go to a restaurant every night. Some nights I have even had just take away and many nights I have gone out wearing just jeans, a top and flats. Most nights I haven’t worried to much with make up or even my hair, just gone out to relax and eat.

Tonight though we spent some time getting dolled up and put on some nice dresses. We had such a good time deciding what to wear, how to do our hair and take pictures.

My mum trying to get me to taste a danish snap called “Gammel Dansk”. I know from previous experience how hard it is to get down but my mum swears it is the best way to keep the flu away on holiday!

I have always liked to get properly dressed on holiday, in fact sometimes I have felt it is y favorite thing about going away. I have always liked to go out after dinner and I am always the last person to want to leave.
This year I am very content after dinner most nights and quite happy to go home.
I dont know if it is just that I have been tired, that I am changing or perhaps I am just getting old.

Tonight after dinner we tried to find a place with a bit of music and a few drinks, but we were unsure where to find it and looking around Agia Marina where we live there has nothing so we decided to go home.
I would have thought to be disappointed not to find anywhere, but to tell you the truth it was really nice to get home and change out of my dress.
I just hope I have not turned permanently into a really boring person!
Having said that though, it is a nice feeling to feel content by relaxing as well and not always having to go out to have a good time.

Anyways, I hope everyone has had a great day. I will update you more on our holiday tomorrow 🙂

For now it is time for this grandma to get to bed.

Happy Birthday Mum!

Today, the 30th of June is my amazing Mother’s birthday.

Last year, we had a great celebration for her with our whole family for her 60th.
I wish so much that I could be in Norway today for her celebration, but unfortunately this year I was unable to go back due to work.

My mum is an amazing woman, and a great role model to me. When i grew up it was just me and my mum that made up our little family of two, and I think that is one of the reasons we are so close. Until this day we still go on holidays just the two of us and have an amazing time, sometimes many times a year. Whilst many of my friends just go with their friends since they turned 18, I prefer to go with my mum and we have at least as much fun as I do when going with my friends. This year I thing the trip will go to Greece and I am so excited!

My mum took me on many adventures when I was young and I think that is what has made me so curious about the world and how other people live their lives.

Even as a single mum, my mum was never afraid of adventures, and to try new things and for this I am so grateful. When I was 14 we went to live in Cyprus for almost three months. We rented a flat where the locals lived, and became close friends with neighbors whom many of did not even speak English. I remember so well us having the children in the flat compartment in for tea everyday and sitting downstairs trying to make a conversation with their grandmother in very simple Greek.
We found some chicken eggs on our veranda in this apartment that was abandoned by their mum, and we took care of them until they came out and then until they where old enough to fly on their own.
The time there taught me to speak English and  even some Greek, but most of all it taught me of different ways to live in different cultures and that there is not necessarily a better or worse way of living, just different.

My mum and I at The Blue Mosque in Istanbul last year

When I was feeling down in my teenage years we got a beautiful golden retriever called Bob Marley. My mum did not really need the extra work load, but she knew how good it would be for me, and it was and she agreed to it. And we ended up having the love and laughter of a dog in our home until he passed away in 2011.

When I was 16 years old and my biggest dream was so go on exchange for one year to Australia, my mum supported me 100 percent and let me travel to the other side of the world for a year at only 16 years old. I am sure it was not easy, but again she knew how I wanted it and how good it would be for me to gain that experience and let me go.

I could list examples like this all day, but the most important thing she does for me is that she is always there for me. As a friend and as a mother, whenever I need support. She is such a fun and loving lady and looks amazing for her age. I am very proud and what better day to give credit to all that she does than on her birthday.
